Differences Between Advil and Motrin (With Table)

For a long time, from when chemist shops have found a place near our houses, it became very normal to rely on a few medicine products for our ailments, especially without prescription of doctors. Similarly, Advil and Motrin are two ibuprofen products that are very popular among people for their pain-relieving properties.

Advil vs Motrin

The main difference between Advil and Motrin is that both are ibuprofen-based medicine brands. This fact shows that on the fundamental level, Advil and Motrin are similar. How they affect someone, how long its effects persist, and their adverse effects, etc. are almost similar. Yet the time taken by both to react is different.

Advil is a brand name of ibuprofen-based medicinal tabs. Advil is owned by Pfizer named company. It is a synthetic medication that has anti-inflammatory properties. If we go a little deeper, Advil acts in a way, that affects the amount of some hormones in the blood that are responsible for irritation and discomfort. Typically, doctors prescribe it for adults and also for kids over the age of two to four years.

Motrin is very similar to Advil. But it also has some different aspects. Motrin is owned by Johnson & Johnson. It is a younger product than Advil for the market. But Motrin is famous and is a good competitor for Advil because of its fast relief properties. It is used for fever & pain and discomfort of the cold.

What Is Advil?

Advil is a trademark name of an ibuprofen-based pain-relieving medicinal tablet. Advil is a firm whose parent company is Pfizer. As ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory drug, Advil also delivers anti-inflammatory effects.

Ibuprofen is a Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug (NSAID), which provides pain relief but does not have narcotics-like effects on the body. Aspirin, diclofenac (Aleve), ibuprofen (Indocin), nabumetone (Relafen), and many more drugs come under NSAID.

When the body is feeling uneasiness, internally in the body, in the bloodstream, the concentration of the molecules of prostaglandins increases, which causes pain, heat, and irritation in the body. Advil starts to inhibit the production and growth of prostaglandins, which necessarily decreases their concentration in the body and helps in relieving pain.

It is one of the very first products of ibuprofen that is launched by Pfizer. In the beginning years, Advil is not so popular, because the medicines take a long time to show their results completely. Advil is launched by Pfizer in the early 1970s.

What Is Motrin?

Motrin is also an ibuprofen-based proprietary medicinal tablet. It is used for the treatment of fevers and mild muscular and body aches, due to viral fevers and cold. Motrin is a very similar medicine to Advil but there are some differences.

Motrin is a trademark name for medicinal tablets which are owned by Johnson & Johnson. Johnson & Johnson is the very infamous name for the brands of cosmetics and medical concerns. Firstly, Johnson & Johnson started to sell Motrin in 1974 in America.

But Johnson & Johnson failed to manage the legal issues for Motrin. And as well as Pfizer had also launched Advil in the market. And as similar to Advil, Motrin also took time to create a name, due to the long period for the complete effect study of medicine.

Unluckily the company has to shut the Motrin brand. But after a few decades, Johnson & Johnson again launched the Motrin in nearly 2009. Now the World Health Organization (WHO) has recognized Motrin and other ibuprofen medicines for the required medicine list.

Motrin is an anti-inflammatory medicine. It is not a corticosteroid, i.e., these tablets are NSAIDs. Motrin provides relief by restricting the development of such natural chemicals in the body, which chemicals are the reason for inflammation in the body.

Motrin has painkilling properties, anti-migraine, and anti-agitating properties, which proves Motrin and other ibuprofens as better options than corticosteroid drugs like opiates.

  4. Motrin is relatively faster than Advil and cures pain soon.
  5. Effect of Motrin fades away soon whereas the effect of Advil lasts long.
  6. Advil comes in a blue box packaging with 50 tablets in a 200 mg packet. On the other hand, Motrin comes in an orange box packaging with 80 tablets in a 200 mg packet.

Advil and Motrin, both are ibuprofen-based medicines, which are now recognized by World Health Organization.  Ibuprofen Advil is an old market pioneer, which has made its place in the market, and therefore it is very tough for a new brand to take its place, in a short time.

Advil has many long-lasting effects whereas Motrin is a quick reliever. And as we know Motrin is a new player in the market, as a medicinal brand it will take time to get such recognition in the marketplace among people.

As it had become a very genuine thing to buy medicine without the prescription of doctors, it is necessary to keep a check on your unprescribed medicine intake. Advil and Motrin are two very popular anti-inflammatory medicines, but before consumption of such tablets, have a prescription from a doctor to be safe in the future.
